Are you Brits so stupid that you spend your time trying to stick your fingers into a socket. I guess Americans are smarter because we use common sense not the nanny state solution to your expensive, overengiineered electrical plugs and sockets.

Elgar's coded missive to Dora Penny lacks his signature. The dot above the character in line three of the Dorabella ciphertext marks the plaintext sequence "EDU" using a transcription key in one of Elgar's notebooks. Elgar's wife coined the nickname "Edoo" based on the first three letters of the German rendering of "Edward" as "Eduard." The title of Elgar's musical self-portrait in the Enigma Variations is "E. D. U." Elgar's signature is identified by the anomalous dot in line three, a number that when spelled out provides his initials (EE). enigmathemeunmasked.blogspot.com/2022/02/spotting-spanish-in-elgars-dorabella.html

What doesn’t help is that walkie talkies are terrible at transmitting intelligible messages. You could probably get two Radio 4 presenters on to sound similarly unintelligible by recording them through walkie talkies 😂

I’m really sorry this happened to you and your family. I’m going through a similar thing with my sibling although I’m 30 and he’s just about to turn 35. I can’t imagine going through this as a child and not having enough information to even know how to react to what’s happening and the loneliness you must have felt staying with family friends instead of your family through that time. It’s a level of loneliness and isolation that no child should have to go through. My heart goes out to you ❤, and you’re so strong for managing to go through all of that without completely losing your mind - I’m sure it felt like you were at times. All the best to you and your family.

north staffordshire here and I think he was legible , My father in law on the other hand , when he was in the company of his brothers or someone who also worked down the coal mines , I had real difficulty with , he had the broadest of broad staffordshire accents which so far as I know is now almost dead , it consisted of just a few grunts and sounds and was very fast

You're right about how the accents are dying out. Gerald has a strong accent and young Caleb, who by all rights should sound the same (grew up in the same place, has never travelled very far) doesn't have a strong accent at all. There is nothing that can be done about it, but it's sad none the less.
